Paraffin wax is odourless, tasteless, waxy solid, and white. Paraffin was first founded by a German scientist named Carl Reichenbach in 1830 which was a great achievement in the industry of candle making. It was highly promoted for candle making because of its clean burning property and was easy to produce and cheaper too. The melting point of paraffin wax is about 45℃ to 75℃. Electrical insulation and lubrication are major and common applications of paraffin wax. It is made from slack wax, a byproduct obtained from refining the lubricating oil. In making paraffin wax, the first thing is the removal of the oil from the slack wax by crystallisation. The slack wax is heated then mixed with one or more solvents and then cooled. This mixture of wax and oil is then filtered into two parts, one is solid which is wax plus solvent, and liquid which is oil plus solvent. By the distillation, method solvent is recovered and later we get pure refined wax. The produced wax is further processed to get certain properties and remove colour and odour. Paraffin wax is vastly used in different sectors worldwide. This is even used for many household purposes because of its lubrication and waterproofing properties. The second major use of paraffin apart from candles is crayon making. Paraffin wax is most versatile and because of this property, it is widely used in the sector of DIY candle making to get the shape of own wish. It is also nowadays used in various cosmetics products.
